Pirates bag fourth straight league win over Durban City

Orlando Pirates continued their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign this week following a clinical 2-0 win over Durban City at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Thursday night.

In what was an awkward night for Pirates, particularly in the first-half, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team talk at the break appeared to have done the job, as quality goals by Lebone Seema and Tshepang Moremi in the second 45 saw the Buccaneers claim maximum points on home soil.

Durban City put Pirates under pressure during the early stages of the encounter and forced a quick reaction save out of Sipho Chaine in their very first attack. With a corner at their disposal, Durban City failed to make the most of their opportunity as Pirates defended their goal line.

Pirates battled to string passes together during the midway point of the first-half and often fell short in the final third of the pitch. In moments where Durban City sat back, the away side continued to look dangerous going forward.

At the other end of the pitch, Gaston Sirino summoned Chaine into action in the 32nd minute after finding space on the left-hand side of the box following a swift attacking move.

Durban City continued to look menacing going forward and brought Chaine into action once more shortly before the break. After Kyle Jurgens picked out Jean Lwamba with an inch-perfect lifted through ball, the Durban City attacker let off a shot that stunned the gloves of Chaine.

Pirates came out firing in the second half with Kamogelo Sebelebele troubling the Durban City goalkeeper with a right-footed shot at his near post within five minutes of the restart.

The Soweto giants continued to pile on the pressure as the hour-mark approached, creating a couple of goalscoring chances in the process. Pirates eventually broke the deadlock in the 57th minute from a corner situation. With the ball swung in, Seema rose highest and capped off the cross with a powerful header on the edge of the six-yard area.

Pirates added their second in the 68th minute following another defence-splitting attacking move. After finding space on the edge of the 18-yard area, Simphiwe Masielela fed Moremi, who calmly slotted the ball home with a right-footed shot that left the Durban City goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The reigning league champions continued to dominate after scoring their second goal, while Durban City offered little threat going forward. Nonetheless, Pirates went on to secure their fourth win on the trot and closed the gap to leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to four points.
