Day of drama in Nedbank Cup as Pirates, Swallows advance

Orlando Pirates made light work of fourth-tier Mpumalanga side Crystal Lake when they claimed a 6-0 win in their Nedbank Cup Last 32 clash at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Tapelo Xoki scored twice, one from the penalty-spot, to go with an Adam Khumalo own goal and strikes from Relebohile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi and the returning Tshegofatso Mabasa, who is now back at the club after spending the first half of this season at Moroka Swallows.
It was his first goal since September. It is Pirates’ biggest win in the Nedbank Cup since the competition was first played in its current guise in 2008.
Moroka Swallows squeezed into the Last 16 with a 0-0 draw against second-tier Platinum City Rovers.
It was another below-par performance from the new-look Birds after their January turmoil, but they won the day when they held their nerve in the shootout.
City Rovers scored their first penalty in the shootout, but then missed their next three as Swallows goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi proved the hero.
Katlego Cwinyane scored a 108th minute winner for Hungry Lions as they won 1-0 at fellow second-tier side JDR Stars.
The striker is a former development player at Orlando Pirates but never quite made the grade, and now, aged 24, will be desperate to prove his worth. He already has three in the league this season and has now scored his first Nedbank Cup goal.
Stars finished the game with 10 men when Azola Tshobeni received a red car near the end of the 90 minutes.
Eastern Cape side FC Ravens won the battle of the lower league sides with a 3-1 penalty shootout success following a 1-1 draw with Spain FC in Durban as they scored late on to send the game to extra-time.
Spain took the lead on 47 minutes through former Bloemfontein Celtic and Lamontville Golden Arrows forward Vuyani Ntanga.
But Ravens equalised in the 92nd minute through Nkosibonile Mtolo and held their nerve in the shootout to advance.
Finally, two goals from Thulani Gumede helped Richards Bay to a 3-2 victory over Polokwane to secure their passage into the next stage.
The Limpopo side had taken the lead through Zimbabwe forward Douglas Mapfumo, before Justice Figuareido equalised and Gumede had the hosts in front.
Tholo Matuludi equalised for Polokwane, but Gumede needed the winner with a little under 20 minutes to go.
